The Golden Pince-nez
Feb. 22nd, 2018 11:07 amFor @astudyincanon book club this week, i listened to an audiobook of GOLD, and one of the things thant struck me was a kind of mirroring between Professor Coram and his secretary, Willoughby Smith, and Holmes & Watson. Coram basically says, all he has left in life is smoking and his work, which consists of dictating his book to his secretary. In a much earlier story, I think SIGN?, when Holmes criticises Watson’s writeup of a previous case (that would be STUD–or maybe it’s in SCAN about SIGN), Watson says, why not write them up yourself? Holmes says, that’s his retirement plan. Coram has been through three secretaries, but got on so well with Smith that after his death he feels more like giving up than trying to hire a replacement. “lost without his Boswell”?
