The Noble Bachelor
Mar. 20th, 2017 12:00 pmFirst, we must spare a moment of sympathy for Lord St. Simon’s friend who has to go through life burdened with the title Lord Backwater.
Lord St Simon thinks quite a lot of himself, but Holmes sees through him, and champions the lady. I see the same kind of “class” crossroads as in SCAN, where the gent thinks he’s “high class” so can’t marry “beneath” himself (in this case, Flora Millar) but Holmes sees Class quite differently.
What I didn’t know the last time I read the canon, is that Hattie Doran belongs to a surprisingly large group of American heiresses who married cash-strapped peers. She got a title; he got the money he needed to shore up his estate. They were known as “buccaneers”, and if you watched Downton Abbey, Cora is one of them.
