i have to admit i’m also pressed to come up with much beyond a list of which other stories this one shares plot elements with. It has the decoy fake job like in REDH, the under employed young man that’s an easy mark for a too good to be true job like in ENGI, a guy pretending to be two different people like in IDEN, a frame up like in NORW, theft of securities like in BLAC, and probably a few more. It reminds me of those semi interchangeable shakespeare comedies that have shipwrecks, girls dressed as boys, twins separated at birth, mistaken identities, etc.
The main action of the crime, the actual theft and apprehension, all happens back in london with no help from holmes, unless he tipped off the police before collecting watson. He did have it half solved right away, and that was the easy half. I think the main point was for holmes to winkle watson out of london for a weekend getaway, because they missed each other. :D
